Wonderful Wurst
At the recommendation of a friend, my wife and I decided to try the sausages at the Salchichas King restaurant located on Calle 14 Bis between Ave. 30 & 35. It’s an unassuming little place with a few tables in the front and connected to a newly developing bar restaurant concept called Contra Cultura which has a variety of tables inside. The menu is small and basically focussed on European sausages although they offer schnitzels and hamburgers as well. The owner, Franz, is from Bavaria and opened this little restaurant a year and a half ago. He makes the various sausages himself. And he offers them for sale frozen. Although the atmosphere was a little unusual, the food was impressive.
My wife ordered the curry wurst with french fries, and I ordered the Thuringian sausage with sauerkraut. The meals came with a warm, fresh pretzel. We also had an agua natural and a cerveza (only Montejo available at the moment - bar service is available).
The curry wurst was authentic and tasty and came with properly crisp skinny fries. My sausage came with sauerkraut, which was some of the tastiest I’ve ever eaten. And the sausage was delicious - although they only provided ballpark mustard. Some proper German mustard would’ve made it perfect. The warm German pretzel was a delicious accompaniment.
This is one of those wonderful little side street finds, that you’re so happy you tried. The prices are very reasonable, and the experience was notable. We definitely recommend it and we plan to go back again soon.
