Beautiful food, great service. If you want great food in rather large portions you need to go here. If you're looking for an el cheapo don't bother. This is class food at reasonable prices. After driving through torrential rain and wind this Cafe was a welcome respite between Nelson and Greymouth. They have a wood fire in a large restaurant with cosy seating and eclectic decor. Their bakery selections are the largest most generous serving sizes I have even seen! They have free WiFi and friendly staff. So pleased we stopped here! Delicious pie! Above average price but the portion is very very generous for its size, creamy and meaty. For a glass of juice, slice of orange almond cake, pie and vegan fillo was $43NZD. Very busy cafe as it seems to be the only spot in town- we went to the smallest bakery in town for its pies and they were sold out but directed us to come here. The staff are very professional, friendly, efficient and fast. So finding a table was never an issue though it was heaving. Interior decor has a rustic feel to it with couches, chairs and benches to choose from- love the huge wooden tables :) There is inside and outside sitting. The toilets were nice and clean. Only giving one star as no zero is available. Appalling service. Waiting in line for quite some time due to the very slow person serving at the counter, finally got to place our order to be told that we couldn’t have the three big breakfasts we wanted because it had now passed 11am and the kitchen was closed. It was 11:03! We couldn’t believe what we weren’t hearing. As it was his fault we were now supposedly late, asked him to ask the manager to take our order. He disappeared then reappeared to say no. Even after running in to the owner outside and a friend explained what happened, he couldn’t care less. Well they got no money from me and now never will. I will continue to visit Beechwoods Cafe as they are wonderful to deal with. Never had an issue with them and only tried Rivers on a recommendation. Unfortunately not a good one as it turns out. Cafe that seem to be converted from a former gas station. Nice open tables offering usual brunch and sandwiches. Prompt friendly service. Was a good lunch stop during our drive. My pie was delicious. Seemed to be a popular spot for the nearby residents too.

Brilliant place to stop! (We stopped here on the way south after having the worst experience at another cafe down the road on the way north) The food was amazing and very hard to choose. We both ended up having a Slider, which was a toasted scone with cheese, relish and ham. It was so good my husband had to get one to takeaway. The coffee was good and the cookies were amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, even though they were very busy. We will be stopping here each time we are passing through Murchison. Thank you team!
