A family run business that we really wanted to love, but just couldn’t. The two stars are solely for how nice the workers were, and the fact that there was plenty of parking across the street.
We came in on a rainy week night, so the outside area was not open. There were two waitresses, a bus girl, and 1 chef. The one waitress took our order, but then got a call and had to leave to attend a party in Boquerón. So then there were only 3 staff for the entire place.
From the time our appetizer came, to the time we received our main dish, we waited an hour. We were already hungry when we arrived, so the wait felt like forever.
The shrimp and steak meal cost $34 (which seemed great!), but then once we got it, it was like cheap wedding food, at best. The veggies served with the dish were clearly frozen and came unevenly reheated.
It was clear they were short staffed, but for the amount of time it took for our food to come, we expected much better. The prices were not incredible either. I would spend the $10 more to go to a fancier location with high quality food.
Again, the family was wonderful, but I wanted to share some reality, as I do not feel the reviews were accurate. I think many are written by wealthier retirees who have money to spend and diminished palettes.

After a day at Playacita Azul, we like to eat at Mao's. Good tasting food and good portions. The churrasco steak is so delicious and tender. You have to try it.

The food (lobster salad) was above average. Service was quickly. I totally recommend it to anyone who visit the area of Joyudas, Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico!

We came from Chicago looking for a great meal. We definitely found it at this location. The service and the food was exceptional. I personally ordered the lobster stew which had a sauce filled with flavor and with a lobster 🦞 cooked to perfection. Another individual from my party ordered the Red Snapper which was well cooked and melted in his mouth. Throughout our meal the chef treated us with fresh slices of avocado and perfectly fried breadfruit. Finally, the 3rd member from my party ordered the Mofongo loaded with lobster 🦞 which was fresh, tasty and exquisite. 100% Recommend

Had the shrimp mofongo...could not have been any fresher then that. Piping hot and soo many pieces of fresh shrimp.
The only drawback was no alcohol (if you are into a cold beer by the water).
Mao’s is amazing! Such a wonderful atmosphere, amazing staff and the food is OUT OF THIS WORLD AWESOME! My family and I have been here several times; more then we can count and each time has been such a great experience. Please make it your business to come here and try the Lobster cocktail, churrasco, chillo frito and you have to have a Tres Leche cake! It will be a very worth while time and you will be treated like nothing less then family! ❤️
