I LOVE Levain Bakeries. I've been to a few in NYC, and happened to see the one near East Hampton on the way to Montauk. Had to do a double take, since I wasn't expecting to see one out this way. The cookies were fantastic (as always). Tried to go back with more friends another time, but they closed so early (3 pm). We'll try again another time! I was so excited to finally try the famous Levain after years of hearing about it. Unfortunately the experience was a huge letdown. I ordered 3 different cookies, 2 of the flavored brioche and a pizza. Starting off with the worst, the pizza was completely inedible. It was so crisp and dried out it must have been cooked 5 days prior. The entire thing - not just the crust - had the texture of a potato chip and just crumbled as you tried to bite into it. The brioche was mediocre. It was quite dry, not a the fluffy, flavorful brioche I was expecting. It also seemed as though maybe these had been baked the day prior. Now to what they are famous for... the cookies... they were just ok. So many competitors have replicated the Levain cookies now but frankly... the competition does it better. If you like a very semisweet forward cookie then maybe you will like it. However all 3 flavors I tried lacked balance, in my opinion.
