Nestled along the canal that leads to the port of Caen, Restaurant L'Espérance in Hérouville-Saint-Clair is a fine dining spot that offers solid good classic and professional cuisine at a reasonable price. The modern decor with a good taste and great views from just about every table creates a pleasant ambiance. The head chef, Stéphane Carbone, who used to be one star Michelin in Deauville, prepares each dish to perfection. The "Menu du Canal" for lunch at €39 is a real bargain. The menu changes seasonally, but some standout dishes include the sea bream with olive oil pesto drenched baguette, duck Normandie on pureed turnip, medallion of salmon cooked at low temperature, and medallion of veal roasted with poultry mousse and girolles. The dessert options are also impressive, such as the chocolate mousse with vanilla sauce and dark chocolate tuille cookie. The wine list is moderately priced and includes a Saint-Amour red that pairs well with the meal. The establishment is run by a husband and wife team, and the staff is friendly and professional. The outdoor seating area is a great spot to enjoy the view of the canal while sipping on a white wine and creme de cassis aperitif. The restaurant is a little out of the way in a residential neighborhood, but it's definitely worth the detour.
