We moved from Texas and heard that this was the place to get the real deal. I didn't expect it given the generic red sign out front and being in a sort of strip-mall place... I was wrong to presume. Its really really good. When I surveyed my born and raised TX wife, she says its not as good as TX but its EXTREMELY close and it's good as it gets. The food was excellent, servers were friendly, I could tell right when I walked in that several of the patrons were frequent flyers and that was a good sign. The waiters conversing amongst themselves in Spanish was also a good sign. The fresh ingredients and great presentation was obviously also a huge plus. A lot of the food on the menu is Tex-Mex but there's a few true MX dishes on there too like your birrias and al pastors, things like that. They have fresh made corn and flour tortillas, a staple down south that's pretty rare up here. Usually you're eating something made by Ortega. Not here! Anyhow we don't live too far away, we'll be back. Don't bother with any other TXMX food in ME if you're close enough to El Mexicano. Food and prices were good, what a typical Mexican restaurant has and tastes like. However our waiter was very chaotic despite his good intentions. Decent Mexican restaurant in Sanford Maine. Family owned, giving great service. Food quality is middle of the road. Some selections are very good and others are just blah. El Mexicano is a wonderfully refreshing and authentic Mexican restaurant. Their fajitas, tacos, queso, guacamole, and salsa are all delicious. Everything is fresh and tastes genuinely authentic. The atmosphere is super cool, with bright pink walls and art throughout the restaurant. Highly recommend and will be back! After a couple of consecutive terrible experiences, we will not return. Food & service was sloppy and terrible. Bill was incorrect. Just overall very disappointing. Guacamole was bland, fish tacos were over done, salsa & chips were OK. Took 10 mins to be seated at a table, another 15-20 to put in drink orders & food, had to remind them about items we ordered, and ask multiple times for napkins. Not worth your time or money. I really enjoyed this place. I went for the first time with a group of work pals and there was plenty of room. The service was great and the food was outstanding!!! The service was Excellent, and the server was more than polite, and understanding. The food, and the "rita's" was exquisite. I totally recommend this place if you are in the mood for great Mexican food, or a Great Margarita, with very incredible staff! One of my favorite places to go for take out, or Dine in! 1st time for my husband and I at El Mexicano Restaurant in Sanford, ME and we weren't disappointed! Lots of choices, generous portions, fresh ingredients, good flavor, beautiful presentation and excellent service. I had 2 different kinds of tacos w/rice and beans. My husband had fajitas. And price? Could not believe how much food we got for not a lot of $.

Havnt had an experience that bad in a restaurant in a long time! First off I know its winter in Maine, but the building was freezing! We literally didn't take our winter coats off the entire time. We ordered 2 kids sprites for our children (ages, 4 and 6) our server brought us 2 adult sprites. Obviously way too much for our kids, but mostly worried us as they could knock the glasses over and spill them. I ordered 2 chicken tacos, with rice and refried beans, I asked for no pico on my tacos, and when our server read our order back to us and said "beans" I made sure to once again say "yes, refried beans please" My order came out with pico covering the tacos. And black beans, I politely told our server that I asked for refried, he pulled his notepad out, held it up to me and said "no you didn't say that" and then just walked away. Okay then! We ordered chorizo queso as an appetizer, it came after our meals came out. We ordered a side of fries for our kids to share, it came out long after our meals and the queso. The kids just sat there with no food in front of them at all for a good 10 minutes. Then when it came to the bill there was a random chorizo taco meal on it, our server laughed and said "oh thats my dinner, I'll take it off your bill" he then brought us our bill and stood over my right shoulder as I counted my cash!
