I like this part of downtown Davenport. Ragged Records is close by, as are favorite bar restaurants like like Armored Gardens and Barrel House. I'd not noticed Blue Spruce General Store in the past, probably owing from a combination of the small sign outside their shop and the relative newness of this location. After seeing a mention of them in the Quad Cities subreddit on a post asking for the best restaurants for lunch, I resolved to try one of their sandwiches.
The interior of Blue Spruce is simple, but very inviting. The flooring is a combination of small white hexagonal tile and hardwood laminate. Shelving on either side of the sandwich counter displays specialized dry goods and drinks, while the counter itself provides views of the baked goods and deli meats available. The ceiling overhead is exposed, including the fire protection piping and HVAC ductwork. Overall, a color scheme emphasizing whites and blues makes the space feel clean and fresh. It's an interesting look overall. There's a few tables to sit down to eat at, but there's clearly intent to grab a sandwich and some other items and leave to dine elsewhere, too. It's a different sort of space for the area, and I like the feel of it.
I was here for a sandwich though, and that was definitely going to happen today. I ended up choosing the Italian. While the sandwich was being made, I browsed the drink case for some beverage choices and ended up selecting a kombucha made by Verve. On the way back to the register I also ended up grabbing some Sterzings potato chips - hadn't had those in a while, but they've been a local (and personal) favorite for years so I wasn't going to pass those up.
This is one of the best sandwiches I've had in the area in a while! The bread is really fresh - it has a nice chew and taste to it. It definitely has that "slow fermented" taste to it, as advertised. All of the sandwich meats tasted like they were fresh sliced. The large pile of arugula and bit of soft mozzarella cheese provided additional texture and contrast to the various fatty deli meats. I talked to one of the guys at the register and confirmed I need to return for the pastrami sandwich in the future. I like an occasional pastrami sandwich, and if the one Blue Spruce makes is as fresh as the Italian, I'll definitely be back.
The kombucha and Sterzings chips were a welcome addition to the sandwich. I'd forgotten how much I'd liked Sterzings - I've been back in the QCA for about 2 years and somehow hadn't had these since. Definitely need more of them in my life! I'd also highly recommend the Verve kombucha - it's the first time I'd had kombucha in a can and it was fantastic! Definitely need to try more varieties of this in the future.
If you're down in this part of 2nd Street in Davenport, you owe it to yourself to give Blue Spruce a try. It's a neat shop in an already fun part of the downtown area. Grab a sandwich, do some shopping, and make a day of it. Thanks, Blue Spruce!
I have been frequenting Blue Spruce since they opened downtown on 2nd St and they have been amazing every single time. I've had multiple sandwiches, specials, breads, and pastries over the last year or so, and not one has been disliked.
It's also enjoyable browsing their well-curated selection of other specialty food products, and their tin fish selection is awesome.
The staff is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. Some bakery and deli items have limited quantities each day, so come early!
More recently they have reduced their store hours to focus on other things, but the quality and friendliness of the place still stands and it's well worth making time to visit on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. They will always have something tasty!
Nice, clean store, I had the club and an orange and white chocolate scone, both were delicious. They have an interesting selection of a lot of organic and small batch products that look like they would be good to try, and they sell honeycomb!
I’m so happy this opened in downtown Davenport! Great location - very easy to walk to if you live or work downtown. I ordered a ham and manchego baguette and a slice of pumpkin bread and loved both. Their bread is delicious. They have a nice selection of grocery items. It is very small, but there are quality items including meats and cheeses, pasta, and some fresh produce like lemons, limes, potatoes, and onions. I’ll definitely be a regular customer here!
Great place...love all of the unique food items! The breads they had this morning looked phenomenal so will definitely be going back to pick a loaf up. The pastrami they smoke in house which was really good.
