J’s Kitchen is a really special spot and a MUST GO when you’re in Bham. I met J, who is a kind and generous soul cooking up recipes from his abuela with a lot of love and care. In the PNW, where Puerto Rican food can be hard to come by, J’s is really doing it right! Don’t leave without trying the mofongo !! The food is amazing. It’s like when your friend invites you over for dinner and you’re so exited because their mom makes the best food. For me, this is the highest compliment. The rice, the beans, the chicken, the tostones - they are all amazing. Don’t sleep on the Mi Madre hot sauce that’s on every table. We were just passing by on the way back from Canada and I decided to try and look for PR food and there it was, only about 8 minutes from us! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, everything super clean and the staff were awesome. They even have dominoes for you to play in the table which we use to teach our son a little bit more of what every family do every time they get together back home. The flavors were on point and every plate from our table, but mine, had a good portion. The only thing that throw me off was that I ordered the Guisado and I have never seen so little amount of chicken on my plate. Please add more chicken to that plate for the next folks! 😂😂 I will add, I don’t like the fact that I needed to pay my food when I ordered rather than at the end of the experience. Overall, 5 stars for this place and I would definitely recommend it and we will be returning next time we are in Washington. Omg. Amazing. Having had many cubanos and having spent lots of time in Puerto Rico, I am THRILLED to have such an amazing place in town!!
