I have been going to Gritty's in Freeport since it opened and before that Gritty's in Portland since it opened. The food quality has deteriorated steadily over the past four years in Freeport. I was served the worst fish and chips I have ever had! Meager portion (the smallest fish and chips portion I've ever seen) and way overcooked. It was dry and I doubt it was haddock as advertised. I've been eating haddock my whole life and this did not taste like it. The sweet potato fries were lukewarm when the plate was served. The cole slaw served with it was sweet and had apple in it which ruined it. My companion had a salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was cooked well and tasted fine but the chopped romaine lettuce looked like it came straight from a bag. There were coarse, partially wilted and rusty stems that dominated the salad. The service was very good and the fish was deducted from the bill, fortunately. I did not ask as I was able to choke it down with tartar sauce. The only other positive thing I can say is the beer was great. If you want a good beer or drink, it's a good place to go. If you want good food, go somewhere else. I will not be going back for the food. Sunday March 3 at around 2:00. Price per person $20–30 Food: 1 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3

Potato Leek soup was delicious and the burger was cooked perfectly. Cholula sauce on the table was a bonus! The bread served with the soup was stale so I tried to just butter it but the butter was rock solid cold. I ended up dipping it in the soup instead because I didn't want to waste it. Pretty quick service, it seemed like they had a lot of people working and hanging by the bar. Big tables would be perfect for large groups. Price per person $10–20 Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4

Great local on the street side bar to go to . Low music so you can still hear each other, and the bartender knows what she is doing. Price per person $1–10 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
It brings me no joy to share negative experiences about restaurants. We tried Gritty McDuff's twice on the same night a few days ago. First time we were told to seat ourselves and we sat there unattended for over 15 minutes. The restaurant was very busy and we were patient as we saw how hard the staff was working. But the combination of that and the deafening crowd noise inside were too much, and I had to leave. The collective voice seemed to grow and echo around the building. After struggling to find another restaurant open that late, we tried again, thinking there would be fewer people. While that was true, it wasn't any quieter. There was no music playing, and the crowd noise echoed and became overwhelming. The burger was made to order and tasted ok. Sadly, had to leave before finishing. Service was good, and again I want to pay them proper respect as they were working with energy and determination. Just wish something could be done about the crowd noise via sound dampening and thought it'd be important to share this information so other people with sensory issues in their families can bring in a set of ear buds or something. After an afternoon drive down Route 1, we decided to look for place to have a drink and some food before arriving home. We found Gritty McDuffy’s in Freeport. It’s one of the few places we could find open on a Tuesday following Labor Day. We decided to sit at the bar. The restaurant didn’t have anyone in there and the bar had one table of about 6-8 celebrating a birthday or special occasion. By the time we left there were several tables in the bar and a few in the restaurant as well. The take out also appeared to be plentiful. In addition to inside seating, they have a nice size deck with umbrellas and a large fenced in area with a play ground, corn hole and a fire pit. The copper bar we sat at was interesting as were all of the numbered mugs hanging from the ceiling over the bar tender. Josh was very pleasant and accommodating. We each wanted to sample a beer as wine and he happily poured and shared his knowledge of each with us. My sample glass was not a wine I enjoyed and he offered up another option (J.Lohr) that was better. My boyfriend had one of their beers on tap called Vacationland and enjoyed it. I had to ask for a new glass as mine had lipstick from another customer- that happens and as a wine drinker, I’m used to it but most often at dive bars. We joked with Josh when it was time to order saying we wanted a sampler of ever app! He chuckled but agreed they should have one but no substitutes allowed as the kitchen wouldn’t be able to handle it when they get busy. We finally went with 3 apps, mushrooms, tenders and the sweet potato pulled pork fries. Those fries were delicious!!! We ate every bite and brought home over half the tenders and mushrooms. Generous portions and it was really way to much food for 2 of us. This stop was definitely a winner!! Hope you get the chance to enjoy this establishment in your next visit to Freeport. Brought family here because we had dinner here 3 weeks ago and it was excellent. This particular time, even though it wasn’t that busy something was up with the kitchen. Ordered the Lamb Gyro, which is what we had the previous time and I made sure my sister ordered as well. We both ordered the same thing, Gyro with coleslaw. The Gyros arrived and I noticed something different about them versus three weeks ago, I included a picture of the previous one. The coleslaw also tasted way different and my sister thought it might have spoiled sitting too long. I asked the waitress about the Gyros and she said that they were out of some of the ingredients they normally included in them. It would have been nice to have been told this after I ordered it, so I could have changed my order. The waitress was very nice but didn’t seem to care about the poor quality of the food. She said that we’ll see you again soon, which is highly doubtful. Follow up, 8/30- Restaurant response to my review and refunded my meal. Really appreciate their caring about the customer and hope to try them again. Thanks! Price per person $20–30 Food: 2 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 3

The food was pretty good and the servers were great but the food took a very long time. The fried shrimp dinner had only a few pieces of shrimp and loads of fries. The water was great though. Food: 4 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 5

It's kind of dark but it was a gloomy, rainy day out when we went so that probably didn't help. Took a while for us to get any service and they weren't busy. Food came out quickly though. Bloody Mary is decent, it's a house mix. The table next to us had one so someone at my table ordered one and they looked completely different. The other tables looked well presented and delicious while ours looked slab together. The fried mushrooms are yummy. The taco special was good. The homemade salsa delicious. The fried clams and fried special was OK. A bit greasy and breaded a bit much. The beer is not the greatest, or at least the one I had for my taste. The atmosphere and the mediocre beer, I don't see myself going back but I like to check all the places out so see for yourself.
